Nundah station mural installation

A new mural will soon brighten the walls of Nundah station.

Simon Degroot's piece, Painting with Pineapples, was chosen by public vote to beautify and revive the walls of the stairwell and ramp at the station.

Below is a preview of the design as well a description of the inspiration behind it.

My design, PAINTING WITH PINEAPPLES, celebrates the history of growing and transporting pineapples in the area. In 1863 Johann Gottfried Wagner (1809-1893) purchased 93 acres and became the first to grow pineapples on a commercial scale.

Wagner also gave pineapple plants to neighbouring settlers. In 1881, a larger variety was introduced and growing pineapples quickly became a substantial agricultural activity in Queensland. From 1947 pineapples grown in and around Nundah were transported via Nundah station to the Golden Circle Cannery in Northgate.

In addition to this rich agricultural and sporting legacy, creative communities are drawn to Nundah because of the charming village lifestyle, bars, and cafes. Many artists live and work in this area including Japanese-born, Nundah-based artist Kenji Uranishi. Public artwork plays an important role in creating spaces for community.

The history of Nundah is a continuing story of human interaction, social engagement, entrepreneurship, and a meeting of cultures.
