OUCH – Customers urged to take care after spike in slips, trips and falls at train stations

Queensland Rail is urging customers to travel with care after an increase in customer injuries caused by slips, trips and falls across the South East Queensland rail network last financial year. 

Footage released today shows painful mishaps including one incident where customers attempt to take their bikes up the escalators at Central station before toppling down and causing a domino effect, taking out those behind them. 

Queensland Rail Head of SEQ Neil Backer said it was concerning to see a spike, with 299 customer injuries caused by slips, trips and falls reported last financial year (2023-2024), compared to 259 incidents the previous financial year (2022-2023). 

“Usually, people are hurt because they're running, distracted by their phones or trying to beat closing doors," Mr Backer said.  

“We're also seeing a lot of incidents involving luggage, bikes or scooters on escalators.  

“The type of injuries range from a bruise or scrape to hospitalisation."

Mr Backer said these incidents were avoidable if people took more care. 

“With the 50 cent fare trial now underway, we've got more people using trains for the first time, so it's important to remember that rushing is not worth it. Another train will be along soon. 

“We urge customers to allow plenty of time to catch their train and avoid distractions like mobile phones while walking. 

“Always hold the handrail when using escalators and stairs and take the lift when travelling with large items.  

“This is also a reminder to be aware of others around you as running into someone or losing a heavy item on the stairs or escalators could cause a serious injury to another person. 

“Safety is everyone's responsibility, and we want all our customers to have safe and enjoyable journeys, free from any injuries."
