Severe weather across North Queensland is impacting the rail network, forcing closures across the North Coast and Kuranda Range rail lines.
Queensland Rail Head of Regional Scott Cornish said crews were ready to inspect, repair and restore the vital transport corridors only when conditions safely allow.
“Record volumes of rain in the wake of ex-tropical cyclone Jasper has caused significant flooding across our North Coast rail line which is closed north of Townsville and the Kuranda Range which is completely closed," Mr Cornish said.
"Where possible and it is safe to do so, Spirit of Queensland and freight services are operating between Brisbane and Townsville, while the line is closed north of Townsville due to flooding. At this stage, three containerised freight trains have been stowed at safe locations in Cairns.
“All Kuranda Scenic Rail services have been cancelled while the Kuranda Range remains closed.
"Once we understand the scope of repairs required, we will be able to provide the community with further information regarding recovery timelines.
“As part of our normal operational planning, and to assist with recovery efforts in the event of natural disasters, Queensland Rail strategically places materials such as ballast and sleepers across our network, but safe access is a must.
“We will continue to keep both our passengers and freight customers informed as the situation progresses, and we would like to thank them for their understanding.
"Our thoughts are with everyone in the broader community affected by the floodwaters, and we hope everyone remains safe."
